Honeymoon Travel Out West

For my husband and I’s honeymoon travel in August 2015 (feels so long ago!) we went out west to Bismarck, North Dakota and Big Sky, Montana. This was one of the longest road trips that we had taken together and all in a 4 to 5 day time period from Wisconsin! One thing we learned was when planning a travel base the distance on how much time you have- this short amount of time was too much traveling we ended up spending more time driving than exploring the states that we wanted to see. Also do more research on the location- when we chose Big Sky we based it on the HGTV show, but soon realized that some cities in Montana have more things to do and scenery than others unfortunately we chose one where we only saw 1 mountain! We were a little disappointed. However, we made the best out of our trip and came away with lots of great memories and fun things to do if your headed out west. 🙂

If your heading out to Bismarck, North Dakota definitely stay at the Kelly Inn! We drove for hours that day didn’t make it there till 2:30am but they still had someone there to check us in and we had the most amazing KING size bed! One of the best nights of sleep! We booked this stay online in advance and saved even more money, but the stay was cheap and the room was great! We actually wish we would’ve been able to stay longer to explore.

A must see in North Dakota is the Badlands at the Theodore Roosevelt National Park! Not only is it a great stop to be able to get out and stretch your legs, but the scenery is beautiful! You are able to look at it from above where they have fencing, but I recommend taking a walk on the trails. We had a fun time hiking the badlands and exploring the scenery along the way 🙂

If you are staying in Big Sky, Montana definitely stay at The Lodge! It was beautiful they have a fireplace, hot complimentary breakfast in the morning, an indoor pool and hot tub along with several hot tubs outside. We used those at night time and they were amazing! Our room was incredible 2 queen sized beds along with a nice sitting area, mini kitchen and bathroom. The view in our room and outside of the hotel had the most beautiful mountain- in the picture above (that was the only one we saw so we were glad we stayed here!). Also if you are looking to save money we booked online in advance and got a great deal on their website.

Some fun things we did were going to the downtown area in Big Sky they had some cute gift shops for souvenirs along with dining options and handmade crafts by locals who were super nice 🙂 That day when we were there it was cold outside so we shared a homemade hot cocoa that was delicious! We also bought some candy from the candy shop that we had later after dinner and found a spot along the river and had a dessert picnic that was a lot of fun! 🙂

One of our favorite parts of the trip were seeing the Ousel Falls 🙂 We were told by several locals that this was a must see! It was a beautiful and moderately easy hike the trails were nicely done and the waterfall at the end was priceless 🙂 ❤

If you have been to North Dakota or Montana what were your favorite places to visit or see?

Such wonderful memories for you two. It’s been 40 years since I’ve taken that drive. I don’t remember much about it. Hope to do it again. I especially like the idea of hiking the trail to a waterfall!
